How to Space Brussels Sprouts for Maximum Yield and Airflow
Brussels sprouts need room to grow tall, develop sturdy stalks, and produce large, sweet sprouts. Spacing them correctly is one of the simplest ways to boost yields and reduce problems like mildew or aphids. After more than 30 years growing Brussels sprouts in both garden beds and containers, I’ve learned that airflow and root space are just as important as soil and fertilizer.

Why Spacing Matters
Brussels sprouts are large, leafy plants—some reaching 2–3 feet tall and nearly as wide. Crowding them:
- Blocks airflow, leading to fungal disease.
- Encourages pests by creating damp, shaded spots.
- Reduces light penetration, resulting in small, bitter sprouts.
Proper spacing ensures the plant’s lower leaves stay dry, sunlight reaches the stalk, and each sprout gets the nutrients it needs.
Recommended Spacing in Garden Beds
- Between plants: 18–24 inches.
- Between rows: 30–36 inches for easy access and harvesting.
In my mild-winter garden, I aim for 24 inches between plants—this gives them room to branch and avoids leaf overlap.
Spacing for Containers
If growing in containers:
- One plant per 18-inch pot is ideal.
- In trough planters, space plants 18–20 inches apart center-to-center.
Staggered Row Planting for Better Airflow
For larger plantings, use a triangular or zig-zag pattern rather than straight lines. This opens up more airflow and light exposure, especially in humid climates.
Adjusting Spacing for Variety and Climate
- Compact varieties (e.g., ‘Jade Cross’) can be planted closer—around 18 inches.
- Tall or late-season varieties (e.g., ‘Diablo’) need the full 24 inches.
- In hot, humid regions, lean toward wider spacing to reduce disease risk.
My Experience Tip
When I tried squeezing Brussels sprouts at 12–15 inches apart in an experimental bed, yields dropped by nearly 40% due to smaller sprouts and more pest pressure. The extra space is always worth it.
