Mustard Greens Planting Calendar (Month-by-Month Guide)

Sharing is caring!

I’ve been growing mustard greens for decades in California’s mild climate, and one thing I’ve learned is that timing is everything. Mustard greens thrive in cool weather, so planting at the right time ensures tender leaves with the best flavor. This month-by-month guide will help you plan your mustard greens crop no matter where you garden.

January

  • In mild climates (Zones 9–10): Start planting outdoors for an early spring harvest.
  • In colder zones: Start seeds indoors under lights.

February

  • Direct sow in Zones 7–9 as soil thaws.
  • Keep row covers handy for unexpected frost protection.

March

  • Prime planting time in most regions (Zones 5–8).
  • Sow seeds every 2–3 weeks for continuous harvests.

April

  • Sow in cooler climates (Zones 4–6).
  • In warmer zones, provide partial shade to slow bolting.

May

  • In northern zones: Sow last spring crop before summer heat.
  • In southern zones: Pause planting—too hot for quality greens.

June–July

  • Too warm for most areas. Focus on soil prep and composting.
  • In cooler northern climates, a late July sowing can succeed.

August

  • Begin fall sowing in Zones 5–7.
  • Sow directly outdoors and water consistently for fast germination.

September

  • Best fall planting month for many regions.
  • Succession sow for harvests through frost.

October

  • Sow final crop in Zones 7–9 for winter harvest.
  • Use row covers or cold frames to extend the season.

November

  • In mild zones: Harvest actively and continue small sowings.
  • In colder zones: Protect plants with mulch or tunnels.

December

  • Harvest greens from protected beds or containers.
  • Plan for next year by noting your best planting times.

My Experience Tip

In my Sonoma Valley garden (Zone 9), I sow mustard greens in late summer (August–September) for the sweetest fall leaves. Spring plantings grow well but can bolt quickly once warm weather arrives.
